"...Perhaps the most striking work I saw was not in Houston but in nearby Galveston. Galveston has a large gay population and Eric Avery is a psychiatrist who runs a clinic for people with AIDS in a local hospital. In his spare time he makes powerful woodcuts in German Expressionist style, mostly about AIDS-related subjects, but also about political topics such as George W. Bush's arrival at the White House. He creates not only the woodcuts, but also the paper on which they are printed, sometimes infusing it with a flourescent agent so that the finished print glows eerily in the dark. Only in Texas, one is tempted to remark..." Edward Lucie-Smith. "Deep in the Art of Texas" in ArtReview, May, 2001. More about the image... |
