The woodcut represents the Circuit of Papez in the brain. In 1937, James Papez suggested that emotion is appreciated by higher cognitive centers via reciprocal communication between deep structures in the brain. His circuit, consisting of the hypothalamus, mamillary bodies, anterior thalamic nuclei, cingulated gyrus and hippocampal formation has been enlarged to include neocortical areas, the amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex. Emotional information and responses are coordinated through this system in the brain. B. Greenstein, The Limbic System, Color Atlas of Neuroscience, 2000, pg 316. |
